Jeremiah 1-6
We'll be in the book of Jeremiah for the next nine weeks. Jeremiah's name likely means "YHWH exalts". Jeremiah ministered to the southern kingdom of Judah after the fall of the northern kingdom of Israel to the Assyrians in 622 BC, during the reigns of five different kings (Josiah, Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoaichin, and Zedekiah). His purpose was to warn the people of coming destruction and urge them to return to God. That sounds to me like something that is particularly relevant for us today.

In reading Jeremiah, I can't help but sense that this is a message to our country today. The conditions that were present in Judah about 2700 years ago aren't all that different than what we see in the U.S. today. And God is clear that He is going to judge that which is evil. But there is hope, because God also promises to protect a righteous remnant when He does bring judgment.
