Genesis 37-42

With the exception of the account of Judah and Tamar in Genesis 38, this entire section focuses on Joseph and God's providential involvement in his life. This section really emphasizes both God's sovereignty and His mercy.

Besides doing good in preserving the Israelites from the famine, perhaps Joseph being sold to Egypt was good for his character. Few men in the Old Testament show the unblemished character of Joseph. Maybe the hardship solidified his trust in God out of necessity. We don't see the rest of the family being very exemplary.

Joseph's faith in Chapter 41 is impressive. He goes before Pharaoh confident that God will give the interpretation of the dream. God can take us from deep trouble to full deliverance in a moment if He chooses. If He doesn't, we have to trust that He is still working for our good. Joseph spent a long time as a slave and a prisoner before God raised him up to power.

It was an act of mercy for God to reveal to Pharaoh what was going to happen so that the people could prepare for the years of famine. But one has to give credit to Pharaoh for having the wisdom to seek an interpretation for his dreams and then being willing to act in response to what was revealed to him.
