In John 13, Jesus' example shows that true love often requires us to do the most menial tasks in order to serve others. Love is not merely a matter of emotions or good feelings, but rather a matter of action.

In John 12, I have been puzzled at the response Jesus made to being informed some Greeks wanted to see him. Digging in a bit, consulting some commentaries, what stands out to me is verse 32: And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”

Maybe this is the key tie in of the discourse to the Greeks seeking him. The time is coming when all men, Jews and Gentiles will be drawn to him, after he has died and risen again.

In re: Pat's comment on cp 13, it hit home to me this AM that the first work God did after resting from creation was to make garments of skin for Adam & Eve, yeah, talk about a messy, unpleasant situation where God stepped in to serve...That messy death of the animals to provide skin clothing pointed to the messy death of Jesus (Cp 12) lifted up to draw people to him, erasing the barrier of sin and shame that kept them hiding from God.

Loren,
I think that you're right on track with your conclusion.

John 17:3 reveals that the essence of eternal life is knowing God the Father and His Son, Jesus. And in His prayer in that chapter, Jesus continually emphasizes that we know God through His Word, which is truth. So as I read the Bible, I am trying to focus on how I can know God better - not just reading for information or even strictly application.
